Class Reading Book – Spring 2 Term:

The Arrival by Shaun Tan

This powerful, wordless graphic novel tells the story of a man who leaves his home and family to travel to a strange new land in search of a better life. In this unfamiliar world, everything is different; the language, the customs, even the creatures. Through detailed and imaginative illustrations, the story explores themes of migration, belonging, hope and resilience.

World Book Day - Thursday 5th March 2026

We are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2026. This year is extra special as 2026 is the National Year of Reading, promoting a love of books and reading for pleasure.

Children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character, in comfy reading clothes, or in pyjamas (with suitable school footwear; no slippers or open-toe sandals, please). We encourage families to get creative using items you already have at home.

During the week, pupils will enjoy a range of exciting reading activities, and our catering company, Olive Dining, will be serving a special themed menu on the day.

We cannot wait to celebrate the joy of reading together.

Change of School Catering Provider – from 5th January 2026

From Monday 5th January 2026, our school meals will be provided by Olive Dining, replacing Wilson Jones. We want to remind parents of how the system currently works and highlight what will change:

  • Automatic meal booking: All children are automatically booked a school meal (this has been in place since September).
  • Meal selection: Pupils will choose their meal at the counter—no need to select a meal preference on Scopay.
  • Packed lunches: If your child prefers to bring a packed lunch from home, no Scopay selection is required.

Key Information

Independent Travel – Year 6

Year 6 pupils are permitted to travel to and from school independently. Parents or carers who do not wish their child to travel independently must notify the class teacher.

After-school clubs: The Year 6 pupils are not permitted to walk home independently after any after-school club. All children must be collected by a responsible adult from the club’s collection point. If your collection arrangements change, please inform the school office.

Mobile Phones and Personal Devices

Pupils are not permitted to bring mobile phones or personal electronic devices onto school premises. This includes smart watches which provide access to messages and games. This measure is in place to minimise safeguarding risks and to maintain a secure learning environment.

Any device brought into school will be confiscated and stored securely in the school office. The device must then be collected in person by a parent or carer.

Uniform

As the oldest children in the school, Year 6 pupils are expected to set a positive example in both behaviour and appearance. This includes wearing the correct school uniform and PE kit at all times.

Please note:

  • Only stud earrings are permitted (no other jewellery, except the Sikh Kara).
  • Smart watches and large hair bows are not allowed.
  • On PE days, stud earrings should be removed and a sweatband must be worn over a Kara.
  • Long hair should be tied back or plaited for health and safety reasons.

For full uniform and PE kit guidelines, please click here.

Thank you for your continued support.

PE Days

PE takes place on Tuesday and Friday for each class. Children must come to school dressed in full PE kit on their PE day.

Home Learning

Reading

Daily reading is a key part of your child’s learning. Please support us by encouraging your child to read daily and establish a regular routine at home, including limiting screen time and online gaming during the school week.

We provide time during the school day for children to change their books as they finish them, helping them develop independence. It would be helpful to remind your child to bring their book to school each day.

Homework

Year 6 homework will include daily reading and spelling practice. Weekly tasks will include either Writing or Grammar/Punctuation. In addition, there will be a Mathematics activity based on the learning covered throughout the week. Some weeks we will also include Foundation subject-related homework or Science, which will replace the English task.

All homework will be set on a Friday. This should be completed and brought into school by the following Friday.
