Current Learning Focus

Let’s Celebrate!

This half term, Reception are learning through the theme “Let’s Celebrate!” as we explore a range of special events and traditions, including Diwali, Remembrance Day, birthdays, and the changing season of winter. Children are developing confidence, independence, and communication skills through stories, discussions, and creative activities, while learning about different cultures and how people celebrate.

In Phonics, we are practising blending and writing CVC words (e.g. cat, dog, sun). In Maths, we are exploring numbers 1–5, comparing amounts, and recognising common 2D shapes. Children are also expressing their creativity through art, music, and movement, and building social and emotional skills such as problem-solving, sharing, and recognising feelings.

Our learning is enriched with a winter walk to observe seasonal changes and a trip to the post box to post letters.

Ways to support at home:

  • Play turn-taking games and talk with your child in English and your home language.

  • Practise writing and sounding out simple CVC words.

  • Read together every day (or at least four times a week).

  • Explore numbers and counting in everyday situations.

  • Share photos of family celebrations for your child to bring to class.

To find out more about what your child is learning this term please review our Autumn 2 Curriculum Overview.
